21d go back to the 50s for the rabbit
46a types as in artistic styles
42d one letter amateur plus kids’ word for what 36 use
54a IVR for Kenya

It really does help if you put the clues. Most people don’t have the crossword to hand. So you will get much quicker help, or you’re relying on someone taking the trouble to look them up

I struggled with this but have got there in the end. I had difficulty in the southeast corner due to the clue:

55 Ward off hail (5)

Which I had put in as GREET ('Get!' as in warding off an animal (maybe 'git' would be more common), with RE inserted to make 'greet' as in hail).

It took me a very long time to deduce that this was not correct.

For Jb25: a hint on 39 down and a more general comment.

I was led down a rabbit hole on this. There is an actress first name Sabrina who shares a surname with a well-known Spanish golfer. This was not the right answer!!

Now to the correct answer. I was brought up in Wales and the song we sung at our ghastly school began. "Where ____ mouth opens wide, far steaming ship on every side, There stands our City and our School" It probably went on something like "Preserving privilege was our rule".

Hope this helps. Maskarade always has clever ideas but it is a right slog to finish.

Flame (and others), the clues are also good for people like me who don't normally do a particular crossword, but like having a go at times!

Finished, after just a couple of nudges from this forum, thanks. Last one in was 49a (Morse lived outside heart of Augusta): by the time I had 3 crossers I guessed the answer, and Wikipedia confirms this addition to my vocabulary as I didn't know that sense of "Morse". An interestingly challenging puzzle.

Interesting, too, that the conventions of this thread differ from those of the Guardian Prize Cryptic, the only other I've ever followed.

Malone, you’re quite right, of course. In this case people may have been reluctant because the preamble stated that many across clues had wordplay missing a pair of letters ?R, and down clues a pair of letters R?. Such information would also be helpful. It might surprise those who request answers or hints to know that many, if not most, are contributed by people who don’t do the crossword, but enjoy cold solving.
