That was my only thought, too, dfg2. I’m not up enough on Catholic hierarchy to know if it’s accurate, but it’s pretty obscure, either way. I didn’t mind the puzzle, but titles should be of some use, imho, rather than understandable (perhaps) only in hindsight.
“Dodgy garagistes” would have been better, and that took me 30 seconds. Unless we’ve all missed something obvious, in which case I’m the first to apologise to Eclogue

If anyone is still watching, I thought I had wrapped this up but now think my entry at 10a is probably wrong. Help appreciated. 'Southern athletic club seen in John o' Groats heading off, nothing's left - they master drudges (10)'. Wordplay includes redundant 'a'.

It’s a tricky clue, notnil. I believe the parsing is Southern (1) + John, toilet (3) + o + (G)r(o)ats (heading off) i.e. no G, and losing the o (nothing’s left), containing C (club), with A (athletic) the extra letter. Last three words the definition.

I’m with Quisling on the admittedly rather convoluted parsing. I struggled because it seemed that the answer should have ended “cy” but was eventually convinced that it had to be otherwise.

Thanks Quisling and Jack, explanation appreciated .It was an enjoyable puzzle but I always want to tie up loose ends when I should probably just move on.

Smashing puzzle but pretty obscure to the under fifties! I attended the same grammar school as the Chaplain (as did John Lennon - I love to name-drop that fact). It was a gentle but irreverent take on the subject, and, I am sure, must have influenced the Craggy Island version!!
