Mystified, as I have a 9 letter word before it

gitti - for 30d French word for "which" followed by only one of the outer letters of "scandal"; Def. crush".
32d. - "fringes" of those 3 words with one letter omitted, meaning a fabric

Will37, thanks so much! So my 9 letter word has to be correct, but I still can't make any sense of my first 7 down answer extras which are, in alphabetical order, EEEMRST

Nothing says a word can't start in the acrosses and finish in the downs. All the words formed by extra letters are in Chambers

gitto - have you put some of the words that you do have in Google?

CD, I now have from the extra letters ………………., which I will think about in the morning. Sometimes, I wish setters would stick to plain English!!!

A genuine satisfaction to find that the seemingly incorrect message full of non-words was in fact perfectly correct, without the usual need to back-adjust some of the extra letters to make it make sense.

Gitto and Kirsanov

I have removed a word from Kirsanov’s post #20 and numbers from Gitto’s post #26 as I am informed that both give away too much information.

Could I please ask both yourselves and anyone else reading this post to read the preamble and do not give away too much information.

As it says, the Listener is a unique puzzle and should be treated with the respect it deserves.

All finished now after a couple of false leads from google - and I now understand what the end of the sentence in the preamble stating what the extra letters spell actually means. Very clever, saved me a lot of time reading about places in Wales!!

I have rarely enjoyed a PDM as much as this one.

Some of the parsing was tricky, and 31A held me up even after my PDM.
