I’m sure this is an excellent puzzle but I just can’t get on the right wavelength and have only 11 entries after several passes through the clues. So I’ll shelve it and perhaps come back with a different head on next week.

A query - given that the BRB is the primary reference, should "majority" at 20 across be "maturity"?

bobbycollins - IMO the last 3 words of 20A give a fair definition of the answer.

It was all plain sailing once the gimmick became apparent - it just took a long time for it to manifest itself.

Struggling to parse 36a,39a,30d and 32d, Also can't figure out what the extra letters spell out, especially after the third word and at the end, where I have OR as the extras.

Straightaway I get 36a!

Or is correct as in…………….
