Hi Raffles,

1oa - there's a character in A Midsummer Night's Dream that has a 6 letter name meaning "ass" and if you "strip off" its outer letters you're left with a common (I presume) German lad's name.

Thanks Brendan. I can follow 12a (missed the ultimatelies), but I still can't see which are the 'flipping extremes' to give the answer to 14d.
Are there other hints without spoilers?

Thanks Melini,

14d - as you mention ultimaties, take a letter in the second word of the answer (the only vowel) and switch the letter at one extreme of 'inertia' and switch it for the one at the other extreme - this will change a term meaning 2inertial2 as in 'be stationary' and change to a term meaning 'assume proud position'.

Sorry, it is a complicated parse and I don't think I've done a very good job at explaining it:-(

Sorry Melini,

14d - the inial "inertia" is 5,5 and it's only the definition "assumes proud position" that is 6,4

The original “inertia” is 10 , but I know what you mean Bren , it can be read 5,5. The fact that is changes to 6,4 in the solution is what makes the clue rather good imho.
