Like chrise, I found the top half relatively straightforward, and then spent most of yesterday afternoon stumped by the bottom!

All done now after a coffee and a rethink. Enjoyed (and got) the theme.

Finished, after reading the forum and picking up a couple of slight nudges, thanks, and using the Crowwrord Solver a couple of times ( including scanning a list of 125 possibilities for 22d when I only had 1st & 3rd letters).

Cod: 6a was clever

I don't see how 7d works: it's just a single definition, really.

I don't like proper nouns/GK as in 14d: I was trying to think how MDM (1500m to a Roman) would fit in, but then got enough crossers for Crossword Solver to offer just 4 answers including the right one.

But after a slow start we've finished it sooner than usual; my husband doesn't often get involved but this week solved a few on his first pass through, and more subsequently.

One left. Most enjoyable! A nudge regarding 25a would be appreciated.

25a - 3 letter "bearing" + "west" + "over" + 3 letter "island" - definition is "pilot"
