8: "Go" + the solution = a phrase for the definition (last 2 words of clue)

Struggling, with NE complete except not understanding 8 (the previous post seems to provide a wordplay but no def), but very gappy elsewhere.

Could some perhaps hint at 13d: if I got those 3 crossers it might set me going. I've tried putting "as" into a "pen" to get "simple", but "nasib" isn't a word AFAIK. Feeling a bit tired and fed up. Can see some sort of theme, but not enough to help.

Hi Pam,

13d - you're 2 letter "when" is correct but it fits inside a famous brand of biro or "pen'" - definition is "simple"

8d - definition is "to die" which is what you do if you Go ????

Sorry, it's not what you do if you Go ????, rather it's one definition of that phrase.

To my mind the solution itself, i.e. the grid entry, lacks a definition.

I see what you mean Jono, but I eventually convinced myself that, assuming "go before it" forms part of the definition, then it's probably okay.

Finally finished after starting it last night. Not an enjoyable or satisfying experience, can’t get on Brummie’s wavel length at all. See the thinking behind clue when I eventually get there with help from forum and word search but even then not always easy. Not sure what the theme is but did learn some new words/ meanings.

I've just finished it, too - after putting it aside for some time.
Only when I had finished did I see the theme! Try putting two or three solutions together and see if you get some titles.

Brendan's nudge on 13d led me to finish the west side except 1d (hint, please?), so I now just need 27a and 28d. If my 24d is right (it fits the first word as defn, but I haven't a clue abiut the wordplay), then 27a with crossers at 1,3, 7 and 9 is not in the Crossword Solver's vocabulary. And I can make nothing of 28d.

Feeling tired today after a lot of singing yesterday, with an afternoon rehearsal before an evening concert of Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn.
