Slow start, quick finish.
I'm not sure about 3d - my answer means "cover", but I don't see the rest.
Some quibbles: 5d is unfortunate; why "half" in 20a?; "likely to be held on to" is pretty loose in 31a.
22a my favourite too.

Hi Chris,

3d - DD, Chambers gives one definition as "to cover on the inside" and the other is "aproach" as in (what was the) 'aproach' or ???? you took'?

31a - agree that "likely to be held on to" is a bit loose.

chrise - I quite liked the misdirection in 5d, but agree with you about 20a (I’d have thought that it’s hardly ever exactly half) and the rather loose element in 31a.
Glad you liked 22a too.

Hi rogissmo
There's nothing wrong with 5d in itself, in fact it's quite good. That isn't what's unfortunate about it.

20a. I took it that “half” was definition by example, hence the “?”, but I agree it could have been avoided.

22a. I wasn’t sure why “Plan” was capitalised.

5d. I agree with Chris. It jumped out at me, but it might have something to do with the order you approach the clues as to whether you notice or not.

Chris, Jono, I'm a bit confused.

If you're both referring to the theme, then wouldn't 28d be the same?

Or have I missed the point?
