Thanks all. I just looked up my second word in Chambers and found the second definition of the adverb which I guess explains it. I have never used this word in this sense - hence my confusion.

Enjoyed this. Have the highlighting. But stuck on 10a. Could someone confirm whether my letters of AGMO and either L or H are correct for the 5 crossers?

Thanks

Smellyharry, those are correct. First word is definition.

Thanks Ozzy, got it now, not sure why I couldn't see that.

Only loose end for me now is the wordplay for the first 3 letters of 46. I have the definition and can see how the last 5 letters come from 500 out of spirits, can't see where the first three come from?

I'm still confused about highlighing. Given that the message is x>y is that to be read as highlight n of x and (n-1) of y?

That seems the most likely interpretation to me

That was my point Throck but I did not express it as well as you. X>Y is true even if Y = 0.
We know the completed grid can contain either 5 Xs or 5 Ys but not both.
You could read the instruction as highlight all 5 Xs and 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 Ys.
There seems to be real ambiguity. That’s why I thought my second word must be wrong.

I think you’re overcomplicating the message and if y was 0, what would be the point of the middle cell?
