Yes, 8 D IS Obsess, rule,dominate etc. It's O, old, Bess is Elizabeth 1, with the S for Society put inside - O B S ess. I can't remember the exact wording, but I remember those elements.

19 D, the clue.......

Dating - courting.
DA - lawyer, district attorney
