The third letter will either be E (if it's STONE) or Y if it's STONY.

I can easily imagine certain types calling someone they were 'cosying up to' 'Tone' as opposed to Tony or Anthony without invitation or precedent. Stony doesn't quite work for me, but I could be wrong. Either way, I'm still stuck on 12 across!
