I was OK with "charging", as in "stuffing".

Don't think I'll finish this one though I'll keep coming back to it, nibbling around the edges. I'm terrible when it comes to British geography despite living here.

Still, the few clues I worked out were witty and engaging. I only started doing cryptics properly from November last year; I hope that by November next year I can take a Paul grid in my stride

Thanks, Jono. I figured that was the intent, but it still leaves me less than thrilled.

COD 22a 14d 20d 11a was a new word for me also. Thanks to all those contributors on the Forum. I wouldn’t have finished it without your input.

ChrisE @ 54: 8d is thematic as the yukky sickly (imo) creation was apparently invented in a restaurant in E. 5dn :-)

Steve, I’ve been to the village. The restaurant has long since gone but there is a blue plaque commemorating the invention of the dish at that location. There is a good pub there though which still serves the dish (though like you, it’s not to my taste).

Worth noting that the former home of 23d is now a National Trust property also worth a visit, also in a small village and also close to a fine country pub!

My love/hate relationship with Paul continues , some very clever clues but a bit of a bore as far as the theme goes. Fact that 8d was created there plus royal connection — say no more. Apologies and congratulations to our friends across the pond for your stamina.
FOI 21a quickly followed by 5d!

As a 3rd generation person of 5d. I knew too many alternative answers for 8d. But realised my parents were frequenters of it's origins and we had the books too.
