Why gentlemen plural in 22d?

Good point Geting, I missed that earlier but you're spot on, it should surely be "gentleman".

Well I rattled through that pretty swiftly. Agree about the plural in 22d.
With a certain answer, I wonder if Everyman is answering the question I posed in yesterday’s Azed thread.

"... this one's charged to protect".

22d - I note the clue now reads "gentleman".

Enjoyed that, especially 27a. Can’t see how 16d is constructed, other than the AR in the middle?

16d - 3 letter "one shooting" goes around both 2 letter "outstripped hare" and the reversed/"over" of 3 letter "backing".

3d - I have an answer but it doesn’t make any sense to me!

3d - each word in the clue is defined by "spot", "mark" and "point" with the definition being at the very end... 😉
