Hi all, first time poster but long term hanger-on.
This has been an excellent challenge, but I'd be interested to hear the views of the Tyneside clue. It does seem very rare to have a clue with an anagram whose letters are described cryptically rather than in the clue itself.
Jono, I agree with that re hoop-la, but as well as being a definition in itself (possibly explaining the 8 if it’s hyphenated), I think that it is part of the other definition. I don’t think “no cheating” is sufficient to be a definition. If it was “reasonable target at hoop-la” it would be a standard double definition and I’d prefer it.
Even though I play the organ I would never have got that clue.
The stop sounds a 12th above written pitch so a written middle C sounds the 2nd G above.
In combination with a flute stop it has a piquant, clarinet-like sound.
