Hi all, first time poster but long term hanger-on.
This has been an excellent challenge, but I'd be interested to hear the views of the Tyneside clue. It does seem very rare to have a clue with an anagram whose letters are described cryptically rather than in the clue itself.
Jono, I agree with that re hoop-la, but as well as being a definition in itself (possibly explaining the 8 if it’s hyphenated), I think that it is part of the other definition. I don’t think “no cheating” is sufficient to be a definition. If it was “reasonable target at hoop-la” it would be a standard double definition and I’d prefer it.
Even though I play the organ I would never have got that clue.
The stop sounds a 12th above written pitch so a written middle C sounds the 2nd G above.
In combination with a flute stop it has a piquant, clarinet-like sound.
Wow, I just finished it! Quite proud although can't parse my LOI (scifi film, last 4 letters must equal 'arabic') but can't quite be bothered to go through all the discussions here to find out more! (Sorry!) Proud of myself for hanging in there, and for my use of multiple highlighter pens. Round of applause to the setter.
