Hi all, first time poster but long term hanger-on.

This has been an excellent challenge, but I'd be interested to hear the views of the Tyneside clue. It does seem very rare to have a clue with an anagram whose letters are described cryptically rather than in the clue itself.

Bluestone,
The pagan groups bit is a reversal (upset in a down clue) not an anagram, so ok. Unless I misunderstand you.

Jono, I agree with that re hoop-la, but as well as being a definition in itself (possibly explaining the 8 if it’s hyphenated), I think that it is part of the other definition. I don’t think “no cheating” is sufficient to be a definition. If it was “reasonable target at hoop-la” it would be a standard double definition and I’d prefer it.

Even though I play the organ I would never have got that clue.
The stop sounds a 12th above written pitch so a written middle C sounds the 2nd G above.
In combination with a flute stop it has a piquant, clarinet-like sound.

Thank you Jono and apologies to Maskerade.

It's the two "s"es that got me

No problem, glad you go it sorted.

For those who can’t wait for the next Maskarade, this week’s Spectator is also by him (as Doc) and a rather simpler affair.
