Sorry, Philo, I can’t think of a homophone of ‘take’ that’s a cut of beef! A rhyming word, yes.
You need a word that means ‘take’ (in the criminal sense). Change one letter without changing the sound, and you have the solution (a theme word).

Well I think I've cracked the theme as I did it by solving a few examples and finding other words that mean the same. I've come back to the forum with six still to get including two themes (23ac and 25ac). Thanks for the hint about 5/9 being this what we're doing. I don't think I'd have spotted it without that.

I could still use a hint for 16d and 13d.

I couldn't parse 22d, but I'm a vegetarian. But I did find a physicist! I had 6d wrong which held me up getting 9ac right

This theme is a mystery to me! I've just started and I have the top left corner filled in - including 1D. I assume I have 1D correct b/c i have the crossers and the wordplay is obvious given crossers. I just don't understand how my solution matches the definition which appears to be "5/9 of this?" !!! I have 5D as an anagram but don't see how that could relate.

boson - it’s not about the 5 and 9 clues. The / is important.

I wonder if i have 1D right? 4 letter ductile material and 4 letter word for "to a greater extent". My solution I know to have only 1 meaning and its a specific type of thing used by the army. Google shows there's another definition. I can't see how either pertain to 5/9
