Hi, roof. I think American works as an adjective.

After considerable deliberation, I am reluctant to accept that 19d is not STEWPOT.

Thanks for your support, Roof, though I have to say I don’t have a problem with the clues you mention. Not all of them are Ximenean, but Paul isn’t a Ximenean, and they all work, I think.

It's Sunday morning here and I'm on my fourth stint at this. Three clues to get

23a being themed I'm going to Google because I don't think I know it.

19d just requiring a pdm I think. If anyone is still out there a hint on 18d would be useful.

Must admit, I don't quite get the significance of "5/9 of this..." I recognised enough of a connection to use it successfully wherever it was mentioned, after browsing through several pertinent lists on WKPDIA, but I'm obviously missing something. And I can't parse 13d at all. Four left now after starting two hours ago, which I must say is pretty good going with one of my least favourite setters.

18d: first word is definition, cryptically parses 3,4,1
Hope that helps!

@rocky: Kitchen units, Indian sitar recitals and... that stuff we used to grow mold on in fifth-form biology. That stuff we use to grow mold on in fifth-form biology...

Hi Trialnerra

The parsing for 13d tricky bit is Tuba dis-covered inside an actual European.

Thanks for all the hints on 18d.

I shall work on it.

I’m sorry to see so much dislike for Paul on this thread, as I find him always chewy but satisfying.
13d: definition is the last two words. Parsing is 4 (think steak), 4 with an insertion of 2.
