You're right Geeker, in the time it took me to write my post, Anish's eval bar went fro 4.3 to 6 - if he can win this after missing the win earlier, that will be amazing.

I was watching that Muzychuk game! What a shame. And of course after I posted, Wei Yi erred and his position is losing.

At least according to the machine...I couldn't find and execute the winning maneuver with 3 minutes on the clock, even with the increment. :-)

OMG, Anish just drew by 3 move repetition and didn't even realise.

What is going on?

... or did he? David Howel is now saying a draw has been agreed, 2 minutes after saying they drew by repetition - I'm lost!

As far as I can tell, the final position had only occurred once previously, so there must have been an agreed draw.

I'm not surprised...I couldn't see a winning plan. Grandmasters Svidler and Gustafsson were confused as well. Having the engine bar can be misleading: I've seen evaluations of +8 and been unable to describe the winning line! In the postgame interview, Giri couldn't describe a clear win either.

I'm confused because I definitely saw Yi call the arbiter and point to his king, which had been checked 2 times in a row and would have been again if if Yi had played the move he was showing the arbiter, but at least 2 of the checks were with different pieces - I think!

Either way, when Yi called the arbiter it was clear from the look on Giri's face that he hadn't seen it - at least that was my reading of the situation.

No, I missed the threefold.

I just played through the moves on chess.com and the game viewer indicates threefold repetition. I was thrown off because the first and third occurrences were reached by 73. Kg2 and 77. Kg2, but the second by 75. Bg3.

We'll never know, of course, but I have a feeling Sindarov would have found the winning line in Giri's position with the black pieces yesterday.

Still, let's hope the big game tomorrow (Giri with white?) is spectacular.

Congratulations to Sindarov. Well-deserved, he played by far the best and most ambitious chess. Round 13 Black vs. Giri was a non-event, quiet Exchange QGD. Judging by how little time he spent, Sindarov likely had almost the entire game in his preparatory "file".

Pity I didn't place a wager on my pre-tournament hunch. 😭
Based on current form, Sindarov will be favo(u)red over Gukesh, maybe heavily.

Funny that 18 months ago, Nodirbek Abdusattorov would have been the Uzbek player deemed likely to storm the Candidates Tournament. Abdusattorov has a disappointing 2025 and I expected Sindarov's ascent to light a fire under him. "Abdu" already dominated the Tata Steel event and I expect him to win more this year.
