and he had prepared the Marshall Gambit line with 12...O-O for last Fall's FIDE World Cup.

Even though 12...O-O looks reasonable, it had never been played in a high-level game. Nakamura's postgame interviews stated that his preparation did not include that move.

[In the muckraking department, Hikaru's livestream directly after the game could have been interpreted as throwing his team of helpers under the bus, but his later youtube recap was more diplomatic.]

Seems to be a theme. He was tapping out what appeared to be prepared lines against Caruana the other day (pawn c5-c6 comes to mind), which in turn led to devastating time pressure.
I do hope he can carry on at this level, and fair play to Fabi for finding a way of winning yesterday.

I have a busy week at work, so can't watch much.
I got used to Jan Gustafsson / Peter Svidler on the old chess24 site, so I've been watching them (time permitting) on the FIDE site.
Peter Leko had been commenting on the grenke Freestyle tournament...I hope he will now appear on one of the Candidates coverage channels.

Giri won today and Caruana has a lost position vs. Nakamura. If that holds up, Sindarov (+5) will be up 2 points on Giri and Caruana (joint +1).

Sindarov should prevail, but I won't concede the tourney to him just yet. If he loses a game, the pressure could mount.

The women's Candidates is much more wide open, with 5 (out of 8) players tied for the lead after 8 rounds. The quality of play on the distaff side has been erratic, with quite a few games won (lost) from losing (winning) positions.
