In both 1d and 37d the misprint is in the last word.

WS, no misprint in 40d. In 37d, it’s in the final word. Slang for talk. You are not looking for a four-letter word, but a shorter set of initials

Thanks quisling and others who responded. Still getting nowhere. Are the three initials taken from 35, 37 and 38 down? If so alas I can't see where thye are taking me. Any final hints welcome, then I'll go and catch herrings instead.

Yes to your query. The three letters are initials that taken together represent the source of the verse. A well-known book to be sure.

WS, to be fair 37 and 38's misprints are as unusual as 35's is obvious. Do you have enough of the preceding misprints to identify the verse's source yet? If so these last three initials won't necessarily be as significant as maybe you think

Can someone help me finish off 21d and 27d I have all the crossing letters but can't make sense out of what's left. I'm assuming the misprint is in the first word of 27d. Can't see where a misprint fits into 21d (despite knowing the letter!) Thanks

Scubaj, 21d, last letter of first word, 27d, third last word are the misprints

Sorry, other way round. I meant 21d, third last word, 27d, last letter of first word

Help, please, with 5d, 18ac, 28ac. I think with the latter I have a wrong down entry. Some of the clues have 'hard to spot' misprints.

btw, last week's crossword was a beauty, and a pleasure to complete. How on earth do the Compilers manage such feats?

Thanks a lot.
