If you think of a word for nonsense and take off the first letters of ‘they wouldn’t’ you get the answer Mikey.

I see there are several hints for 6D but I'd like to ask for another one if possible. I'm one of the overseas (Canada) solvers (sometimes start these on Friday evenings) so a lot of political references are bound to elude me. Hoping that if I get 6D I'll then be able to get 16A of which I've got 5 crossers but still can't solve. Missing a few others too but, one thing at a time and I prefer to wait until Monday before asking for help but not this time.

Hi Everyone
My heart sank when I saw it was Vlad, but I have managed to get a few in the last hour, but I'm a long way off finishing. FOI 5d. I do like 10ac.

I spotted the political references, but haven't actually solved them. I keep falling asleep after lunch. Can I have a couple of hints to get me going again. What about 1d and 19ac?

6 is an anagram, though the construction of the clue is a bit odd. "How the West was won", if you remember it?
I had never heard of 16a, but I think it's an anagram as well (I haven't written it out to check).

1d the sign is astrological. Do remember Bill Tidy in Private Eye?

Difficult to give a clue for 19. The "right" is a rather old term. "Others" is probably the best way in.

6d is an anagram, though the ordering of the clue is a little unconventional. I feel for you as there are are many specific UK political references in this puzzle. 16a is an anagram of parts and an &lit-ish definition

Thanks to jono and chrise I now have 6D... and I almost had guessed it but didn't quite have it right enough to see the anagram. Will it give me 16A? We will see...

Thanks Chris

I managed to solve 19ac I think though I haven't fully parsed it yet. I'll have another go at 1d. I've been out to get the washing in before the next shower, which may just wake me up.

Is 12ac astological too?

I haven't managed to sort out the anagram for 16ac, but will keep at it. I'm assuming it ends ire.
