No need for help now. Thanks. Asking the question seemed to help per se.

Consider "routed" as an anagram indicator.

Struggling is putting it mildly. Policeman Macruiskeen would no doubt say that this was “a fearsome pancake; a compound crux , more troublesome than the Atomic Theory.”

Bananabean @20, I appreciate this may be a difficult puzzle, but I do think suggesting where characters begin (thereby excluding a large part of the grid) is giving a lot away. As is the initials of extra words

Bananabean - I am happy to confirm that your revelations have not been even the tiniest bit helpful to me but I'm not sure that a full list of answers would be either. Looking forward to 4718!

On the bright side, this puzzle is definitely going to save me the cost of a postage stamp.

After more hours than I care to count I finally completed the grid an hour or so after the rain arrived at Headingly. The second and third wending characters didn't exactly leap out, but were eventually winkled. But the first one, three fifths of whom are clearly visible, eludes any attempt to get him finished. Are those three letters red herrings? I have the final step, so I'm lacking only one stage (and 2 changed letters).
