Could someone please put me out of my misery for 7 down, the only clue that baffles me? Is it a thematic clue and what is the definition? I can't see anything that fits either of the two. possible enttry words, nor the wordplay for either for that matter! Is there a missing or extra letter lurking somewhere? Many thanks.

re 7d Def is the last 5 words. An extra letter in the first word.

Simon - you’ve now confused me re 26a. I have the additional letter at the end of the entry following a three letter answer for Gods. Is that what you have?

Sorry cd, the confusion is entirely in my own head! For every clue I tackle/solve, I have to step back and remind myself about the two directions of escapees - something I'm really struggling to keep in mind! So what I have for 26a is probably the same as you ie. a 3 letter answer for Gods plus the additional letter. I've entered the first two letters in the grid but still need to solve 20d or 24d to confirm the order of the last two letters. Hope that addresses any confusion I've caused. My earlier confusion was because the first and last letters of the four letter starting word form a two letter word which also means Gods.

Thanks Candledave. I now have the necessary 14 alterations giving me three characters arriving at the destination, I am now only baffled by the final two instructions.

The seven extra word instruction is causing me to pull my little remaining hair out. Without trying to give too much away, if I add up the extra words positions within the relevant clues my sum is 29 - does that tally?
