Many thanks Jazzgirl

I was removing just the S from scalpel.

I missed this one when reading from this list of all these books I've never heard of.

I still have four to get. - 17ac, 10ac, 12ac and 7d

Any hints from a couple would be helpful.

I usually like Paul, but not this time.

Just got 17ac!

I haven't posted on this site recently, but always use it to help me with the Guardian Saturday Crossword. Thankyou all!
I found this puzzle extremely difficult although I used to read these books with my children and we all loved them.
BUT the author has two names so why is only his title mentioned?
Saturday morning I curl up with the puzzle. I say to my husband that it's "impossible" and he always says that I'll have done it by the end of the day. Which I have.
Thanks everyone for your help.
"See you next week!"

You haven't got 7D???

10A is the letter A + a specific number with "sex changed" (similar to how "changed sides" means replace L with R or vice versa). When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's somewhat like this word.

17 a parses as 3 ("contains"), then 1 inside 3 ("witch")
