Perhaps that Aussie word is a corruption of ‘shindig’ ?

Could be, Jono. Lexico suggests 50s origin, poss from ding-dong or wingding, a US term

Of course, there's also "shindy".

Hi Brendan

Thanks for your help yesterday.

I'd already got 24ac. I'm struggling with 24d, which is special. At the risk of a spoiler, I have C?AO, which only leaves one word and I can't see the theme letters let alone a definition. Are my crossers right?

I think I have 21 ac. I had this earlier, but dismissed it as the chemical is not one I'd heard of. ChrisE might know.

Your hint on 43ac was really helpful.

Unfortunately, I can't get either 5d or6d. I have ?O?T?T for 5d and ?O?D?I. Are any of those letters right?

I've still to annotate my map.

Hi Brendan
Re your posts at 73 and 83, aren’t the thematic pair the 4th and 5th letters rather than the last 2?
I hope so, as if not I’ve gone very wrong - I thought I’d managed to solve this monster at 12.45 am on Easter Day!

Re 19a (can’t see that anyone has replied to this yet): you need to split Passover into two.

roof.
28d - your crossers are right. The thematic letters are in the middle and the solution is Italian but in common currency in the Anglosphere.
5d - your letters are right. The 4 letter solution is a French word.
6d - unless I’m mistaken about 21ac (see above) the last letter should be N.
