Still not quite sure how the long clue works. If it’s a reverse anagram, with the final word of the solution the anagrind, why do we have ‘sorted out’ in the clue? Or maybe it’s not a reverse and ‘sorted’ is the anagrind, with ‘out’ a synonym for the final word of the solution, which it almost is but surely not quite?

5 parses 4,2,1. It's what a hawk might go into.
6 the definition is "off". It's 3,3

Paul is normally a slow start and fast finish for me. This has been the opposite. Off to a flyer then found that I had the wrong first word in 11a (there is a very viable alternative) and the wrong word completely for 22d (again a viable alternative with an s as 4th letter. This didn't feel like a normal Paul to me.

Anyway, after beginning at 8am I'm still lacking in much of the SE corner. Hints for 20d if it is a very scientific word would be appreciated.

Hi Rocky,

20d - 4 letter anagram/about followed by an old English word for "that" - definition is "hypothetical particle".

Re. Your not "normal Paul" hunch:
Perhaps time to re-examine that old Abbey Road album cover for more evidence.

Stuck on 26a. No-one else is, I'll bet.

I didn't much care for clue 22 either. Paul perhaps not in top form today. Many good clues up to his usual standard, but a surprising number (4, incl. those I listed on the first page) of clinkers.
