Found this reasonably straightforward although had 9 wrong which held me up for a good while. Like Brendan hadn't heard of use of the word in 8 before.

I found this difficult, but finished in the end. I was familiar with the "unfamiliar" use in 8d!
Puzzled by 23a - why is it "quantities?

Chris, see Defn 7 in Chambers. I wasn’t familiar with that either

Thanks jono. If I took liquid in a breath, I think I would choke!

Can't believe that the last clue I got was the area I stay in. Just couldn't work out the anagram and kept thinking it was 7,4 not 4,7. Earliest finish ever.

I started this quickly and finished it quickly but had a real slow solve in the middle. I’m sure of all my answers but am struggling with the parsing of 9d. Please enlighten as it’s really bugging me.

Well I have answers for everything but I had to use a missing letters solver to get the last word of 9 and 8 (of which I was thinking along the right lines re: ruff) but couldn't think of the word.

I thought it wasn't up to Paul's usual standards to be honest, a few clues seemed a bit iffy to me.

DrJax, my parsing of 9d is as follows. 1 letter for ‘by’ and a two letter abbreviation for Post Office, all surrounded by a composite anagram of words 5 and 6 and the initial letters of the first three words. This would mean that the definition is doing double duty, as it’s also contributing to the fodder.

Jono, isn’t it the whole of the second word and the first letter of the third rather than the initial letters of the first three words? Also, thanks because I was struggling to find the 1 letter given by “by” - never seen that before

As in a piece of 2 by 4 (as in a plank of wood say)?

Although I was way off in my parsing I thought the first 2 letters must have been "initially seen"
