Thanks Rogissimo,

I see what you mean and a quick look in Chambers shows it's a "so-called salmon", so perhaps the clue could have included a ? or other indicator.

Sorry, "so-called golden salmon" I should have said.

Yes, brendan, some indication of the misnomer would have done it. I spent too long thinking of cut raw salmon - LA(X)!

Am I right in thinking that 36 is a thematic word (by way of construction) yet not thematically clued?
Disappointed 5d and 36d don’t employ secondary anagrinds for the ‘subby’ parts (forum member Buddy will definitely not approve!).

I was just about to write exactly the same thing about 36a. I suppose it could be a mischievous trick by Maskarade, because it would mean that 31d is one of the fifteen after all.

Not sure I understand the issue with 5d though, Jono. That's not a thematic clue, is it? It seems to parse the usual way.

Rainman, it’s not a problem, but there was some discussion (on another thread) as to whether, in general, you need to provide a secondary indicator for the subtracted letters when they are distributed in the main fodder (I probably haven’t explained that very well)

Can someone put me out of my misery on 50A? I have .n.a.g.n
Is it an obscure reference to Edmund Spenser’s poetry? Not top of my reading list!
