Well, I am a mathematician and it never occurred to me that I should be working modulo 27 rather than 26, although I should have read the preamble more closely. I think I have the thematic writer, but they do not seem to relate to any of the ten extra words. I am puzzled by the blank but perhaps it will dawn on me. The message from the across surplus letters does not make a lot of sense, though that from the down letters does. I think I am going to be in for a lot of grid staring!

Minor point: If 4d is &lit, it seems to be a strange description of the tragedy!

The message from the across letters now makes sense! Silly mistake of mine. Mind you, it is pretty vague, given the subject's output.

There's a bit of knuckle-rapping in The Other Place (though the hints dropped there have proved singularly unhelpful to this eejit), so I've come here for the illicit sight of a bit of leg. (The subject would have expressed it that way, perhaps.) I know the writer; I have all the hidden messages; I have all of the extra words; I see a large brick wall. Is the 2-word hint given by the down clues a work by the subject (one of a very small number), and if not, where does it tie in with him ... oops!, gave the sex of the subject away there. The last four of the extra words seem perhaps to be related ... is this so?

The 1st of the two words is an anagrind.

Not you, sunray (but these are) -
14a is a straight clue - 3 letters for stories/table talk + d + em.
28a lose the 'f' of 'fill' - def is 'slough props' = structure on a marsh eg + 3 letters for time (all after gr).after

9d - lose 1st letter of 1st word (it's the usual, playful toilet sense) on the outside of saint+'L'
23d lose a letter to give an archaic ref - anag 'risking'
