I am getting really concerned about my grid. I still only have 4 clashes with only 5 possible empty cells in the NW corner. However, my logic (often flawed) would suggest that there is a clash in 37a and 39a, but I don't have either.

I had 5 down as N in a word defined as "conjugal union" in Chambers, but I think cs75's suggestion of bd is better. Not sure I like the inconsistent ways of showing M and its successor, though.

The final illustration is reminiscent of a discussion last week, but there's no arguing this time!

Just confirmation please - I only have 1a,1d and 4d to finish the grid and there has to be a clash in each of the down answers - is that correct
