Doh ok ;)

Not sure where the 2nd word of 1A comes from either (unless it's a synonym for ended I suppose)

Opa Lola is my fav Hawkwind tune. Bit confused by 17 d - think it is an anagram of icon and visa which makes a word but it doesnt fit with my current letters _v_n___s. Any guidance appreciated.

Presumably that's a later Hawkwind song than when I was going to their gigs (late 80s/early 90s), I will check it out, last album I bought was Electric Teepee I think, which wasn't very good.

Your N is in the wrong place for 17D. It is an anagram.

Hi DTK,

17d - You're right, it is an anagram of 'visa' and 'icon'. Your N is wrong - have a look at Richard's @23 for guidance on 21a.

It's on the same album as A and B, strong German influence, sounds like Neu. Got it now, didn't realize that 21ac was a special clue.

Ok it was on Warrior on the Edge of Time (another album Michael Moorcock was involved with), but it was incredibly rare/expensive on vinyl so I didn't have it. Assault and Battery was on that album too (but had Simon House on violin rather than Huw on widdly widdly lead guitar) so I didn't like that version as much.

That was fun! Getting 17d was my "ah, now I get the instructions" moment which led to some corrections. Really nice that the switches have the same letter counts.

Thanks to everyone for the clues and Brummie for a satisfying but achievable (with help :-) challenge.
