I hope you get a view of the ground and lets hope it is not flooded. Probably Ok in July but it was under water for the Kent game in June a few years ago.

It is never straightforward there and I often wonder if I am the only customer who has problems. I am sure Cassie thinks that I am an "awkward customer", but she puts up with me nevertheless. I liked your "breakfast serials".

Jigjag,
You really must watch/listen to “ sorry I haven’t a clue”.
Compulsive listening- past episodes available on YouTube.
Following up on the Camp coffee, ask the lovely Cassie if she has any Libby’s condensed milk to go with it.

Tyke,

Re your post in this week’s Peer Review (soccer) and your reference to Sheffield. From your earlier posts, I assume you are from God’s country so you might be interested in my Sheffield football links.
Selling Rag magazines in the Owls’ dressing room in 1964, a player asked if I wanted his autograph- sorry I said, I have no idea who you are - turned out to be Johnny Fantham - their leading goal scorer. I was from down south - Spurs fan.
Five years later, happily married to Sue, we walked out of the
Blades v Liverpool match - nil, nil at half time. Never been back.
That was when one side was open - to accommodate the cricket ground.
In our local village, the local publican has only recently retired - Dave Smith, ex- Wednesday goal keeper.
Happy days.

Simplesimon,
I live in Doncaster and support my local team as well as being a Yorkshire CCC member ( think I must have broken several mirrors! ) I started at Manchester University in 1969 so watched both City & Utd when I could.

My dad took me to Bramall to see Johnny Haynes playing for Fulham - it must have been 1959/1960 - that is my first football memory.
In the 60s we often used to go to big games in Sheffield - I saw Pele play for Santos v Wednesday - he was past his best by then! I can remember the Owls beating Man U 5-4 on one occasion - the walk back to the rail station was a bit fraught!

I saw Spurs beat Rovers 7-2 at the Lane - Mr Chivers was in good form - we had Chris Balderstone playing for us - he once famously played cricket for Leicestershire and football for Donny on the same day! Looking forward to visiting the new Spurs ground one day!

Tyke,

We live in the village where the Apple fell on Newton’s head - Lincolnshire - so no teams really less than 30 miles away - Nottingham, Leicester. We bowl at the indoor rink in Melton Mowbray and most people there are Leicester City fans. For our World Cup sweep stake, I’ve got England and Sue’s got Australia. I spent most of October trying to swap my ticket for almost anything else! Still prepared to swap too.
I never saw Pele play - but I did see Bob Dylan at the city hall in 1965. Last trip there we saw Jeff Beck - about 8 years ago.
Trying to fix a mutually agreed date to meet up with Norah for coffee in Sheffield but she prefers the longer Spring days.
I used to run various RAF football teams in the 1970s and Wolves used to come and play us at RAF Cosford. We always lost about 12 - nil. One year we scored a single goal and Bill McGarry was raging at them!!

Simplesimon,

I regret I never saw Bob Dylan - I know he`s still touring but I liked his early accoustic albums best - not so much the later stuff. I did see the Who, Stones, Pink Floyd etc, so am not complaining!

There is an indoor bowling centre on Scarborough`s North Bay - the Cricket Ground is only 5 mins away so some Cricket members go there for lunch - it seems very popular! I prefer to visit the nearby North Riding Fisheries!

Oh no, there's a Seven Seas advert coming up that refers to "omega three". Please ignore any puffs that don't at least get it right as "omega minus three".

I have noticed 'homage' frequently pronounced as the French 'hommage'. Unless you are speaking French, why change the perfectly good English word? Affectation and pretentiousness come to mind.

It's a relief to find one's nitpicking views supported, this time as long ago as 2006:

It irritates me too, ph. A year or so ago I sent an email to Radio 3 asking them to stop pronouncing it in the French way, a habit they had been developing and which they never used to do. A lot of English hymns and poetry will not work unless homage is pronounced in the way we're more used to.
I've looked at that link you sent and I'm not entirely sure the root is homo for man. The OED gives a long list of associated words and dense etymology which I can't be bothered to read closely this early in the morning but it seems a late Latin word homagy is the source, which may come from homo, but the earliest recorded usage in English is with respect to a woman, not a man.
It seems homage in the French manner is popular in the arts world, when a work of art is intended as a tribute to someone. Arty people can be a very affected lot sometimes.
