Forty ... a bit like a fort

I've seen "apply" in at least one puzzle to mean of/like apples (as in "apply liquid" or something like that to define cider).

I also remember "wally" to define PARIETAL in a Listener (4448). The answers in that puzzle were entered in wiggles, which meant minimal feedback from the grid, and it took me as long to solve that clue as it did to complete the rest of the puzzle!

I would spell the apple adjective "appley". Dictionaries seem to agree:

As well as having other meanings, wally can be used to describe something strong and sturdy, hence like a wall. But it cannot simply mean wall-like, except in the roundabout way I've mentioned.

Tyke, that one uses an -ish suffix, ‘ref-ish’, so not quite the same, though it does open up other possibilities perhaps…
