4d really derives from the full clue (1d,4d). 4d itself parses as 3,4: the first 3 characters are the tag end of an anagram, the last 4 are a "type of rock" .

1, 4 is an anagram + a genre of rock

19, 25 seemed to be most people's first one in (but I got 14D first).

Flash car (5) comes up quite a lot which is "outside" of all of these, in order: hip (2), grand (1), something made of rock (5).

Light dawned and I got 19, 25. Why I didn't get them earlier is a mystery. I saw them when I was 15 or 16. But I remain puzzled over 4d. I'm waiting for the PDM.

If you saw them live aged 15 or 16 you could be any age between 17 to 70 :)

1, 4 was also an influential artist for them and many other bands. Played the piano as well as sang anyway.

Thanks PS

Got it including 1d. I was so sure 4d was going to be shadows! I asked my husband (who knows a lot of geology for a genre of rock). Interestingly he came up with the answer.

The last four letters of 4 are the first word of the name/trademark of a tacky/touristy chain of "theme restaurants", the second word of which is thematic to today's puzzle.

The Shadows may help you later on anyway.

20 minutes before Montalbano and four left to do - 25d and 20d and 28ac and 30ac

Any hints would be welcome, especially for 28 and 30ac.

I was held up at the start by the fact that my husband left the paper outside on a table and it rained. It is still crinkly, but at least I can write on it now it has dried out.
