Check the list of words that can be created from you crossing letters and look for one that could be considered an anagram indicator. When you think you have the right one just check the phrase in a dictionary or on Google to confirm.

Thanks for all your help. Brendan. If my "monkey nuts" had cut the mustard I'd have been up and dressed half and hour ago! Have a great day! :-)

Once I twigged the theme I had to Google it as I have never heard of 20 23 before. Typical Paul once you get into it it starts to flow quite nicely.

I am struggling with 14 however and 10. And then I'm just about there.

Also, was 20a a similar clue in last week's?

For 10, perhaps you need to be a Cockney...but no rhyming.

Ok Lucertola. I get you. I'd have had that as two words

It usually precedes "guv'nor" - although I've lived in the East End and Essex my entire life and haven't heard it used once:-)

Add me to the list of people who got the theme early although LOI was 20,23! I used some coarser 23s at numerous times when solving this, leading to admonishment from my other half, to which I replied “sorry but it’s Paul”.

I had to go slowly and carefully through this thread to land 20,23. Thank you for the hints. Maybe I had heard of the phrase in the distant past, but it didn’t click.

Papal cigar is fantastic! Shame there wasn’t room for something involving violins and parasites... (12)... ;-)
