Hi Dayzymay,

20d - Unless you've come across the phrase before, you won't see a connection between 20d and 23d. Instead, check all the words with your letter pattern and pick the one that is most likely an anagram indicator (for 23d) - then look up both words together in a dictionary or on Google and you'll see how the term relates to the theme words.

PS. Your letters are correct.

Thanks Dayzymay, I think judging by the comments, the vast majority of us on here had never heard that phrase before:-)

Hi Brendan

That was a very useful hint, which I got straight away, but meant neither of my two possible answers for 20d was correct. But I found a third word that fitted my letters and meant make an anagram, so I finished. I google it as Like most others, I'd never heard of it and I couldn't find it in the dictionary. I was able to tell my friend in Sheffield, with whom I share the crossword on Sunday mornings, that Brose and Bender were definitely wrong!

I am another one who had not previously come across the expression in 20,23d - but I did guess it right and then look it up in Wikipedia - so now I am that much wiser - as I think I should be after finishing a good crossword. Thanks, Paul.

Just finished. Yesterday (before I had got the theme) I gave my partner a lift to her brother's. She gave me a late instruction to turn right. I was in the wrong lane and shouted an un20d23. LOI was her favourite 20d23 - 12across!
