cs75, I think you’re right about the 5-letter word. I couldn’t see it other than where you mention. It is in Collins, but I’m a little surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the preamble. Though perhaps that was long enough already ...

I only knew what the film was after finding and Googling the quote. Then everything else became clear.

I can’t find the final member of the set in Chambers either other than as a reference to the etymology. It does appear with an additional U.

Candledave, your explanation at 36 is far better than my efforts!

monkjunk: as has been mentioned, the 5-letter word is NOT in Chambers. It's an alternate spelling of a 5-letter word the is in Chambers and if you change the 3rd word of the cryptic clue derived from the extra words to its opposite, you will get a cryptic clue to the one in Chambers
