Ok thanks loge, so it is just that 5 letter word that goes in the box. I thought I had to do another cryptic contortion to get yet another word. In which case, I’m all done but can’t parse 5d . I thought brothers was extra word for a long time but obviously not.

I'm making steady progress but now I'm worried that I've made a mistake because of 30a. I have 4 letters from the crossers but can't make anything fit either from the clue or from Chambers. A hint/shove would be most welcome!

Thanks fgsitw! That's a new spelling for me. I must remember to delve in the back of Chambers more often.

I understand how the 5-letter word completes the set and it clearly fits the cryptic clue derived from the extra words. However, as I see it, the metaphorical container is defined by words 4-7 of the complete quotation - the closed curve depicts those same 4 words. How does the 5-letter word represent an item from that container? The metaphorical container contains word 7, right?

Further, the instruction says "a film quotation describing the selection" The selection is the 5-letter word - how does the quotation describe it?

Unless there is some obscure definition or brand name associated with the 5-letter word, then I don't think this all works.

Still it's a rewarding, timely and very tough Listener.

My take is that the grid is a metaphorical version of words 4-7 of the complete quote and all the extra words plus the additional selection are metaphorical versions of the 7, all with d........ c......

So it works for me (I think)

5d: Def is brother (exclamation) with 's meaning. Card game is the answer with L changed to R

8d: Def is 'group of old' - an obsolete alternate spelling for a group; misprint is PASTA - wordplay is simple containment

I think I have the answers to 8/39 but can't see the definition for 8.
Also my 5-letter word only appears in Chambers as a foreign language reference, Have I got it wrong?

I think you’ve given 39d, Buzzb. The first two letters of 8d are an abbreviation in Chambers, with distressed being the definition, as in made to look old
