Ok so i am in Italy with no access to a printer so totally reliant on the Guardian app (as I was last week) to do this crossword. A home any idea why there is no Prize crossword available in the app today? Very distraught.

Ok I googled it and there was a link there that took me to a slightly different version than i'm used to in the app. But I'm there. Thanks Jono

I'm having trouble with the first words of 18ac 24, and 25ac. For 18 I have F?R? and believe the second word is clear, a shiner. Is it a film I'm missing? Not on his list. And for 25, I see the word but how is it something with a hole? I look forward to finding out.

Hi ethereal
I think the whole lot is the "shiner" (a bit loose). It's a cut word for something left over in a 5 letter wrod that (again loosely) might be a duel.

25 firsrt word Is a sporting reference.

AND I just found it's the title of a 1964 film by our director which wasn't on the list I first saw! There's another film of the same name, British, 1997. So I've learned a little something from Paul and the Forum. Merci.

I confess I slumped when I saw it was Paul. I used to be on his wavelenght, but no more. I got 13ac, but like Brendan had never heard of it. I got 4 down but can't parse it.

I wondered why the capital letter to Duel, one of my favourite films, so thought of this director. From the thread I got 12 the name of my favourite Salvia. But I'm quite stuck. I'll work on a few more and no doubt be back for hints. I haven't quite worked out what the anagram is in 19ac, but I'm guessing the answer isn't small child.
