Yes, 4d and 4a have clashing letters.

Foinaven - notice I spelt it correctly this time - we agree with you re (!!) 33 ac. All completed apart from parsing this last clue.

33a I wonder if it was originally "leg"/on and it got changed.

33a I'm confused, I've got a 4 letter hard growth with the LE reversed/west-facing and definition is "tree" - what part of the clue matches up with "to trap"?

Brendan, 'tree' can be a verb.

I am, however, stumped by 34a. Hints appreciated.

34a was my LOI - definition is "playwright" (an actual one) 2 letters for "sailor" then 5 letter word for "narrow-minded" - there is a clash with the last letter of 20d.

I know it's stretching things a bit but couldn't the el in 33a be l = left = "on the west side etc."?
