I'm off to bed, but thought I should tell you I finished the crossword earlier (about 8.00pm) and want to thank you for your helpful responses.

11,21 ac was one of my LOIs. I had most of the crossers and it came to me in a flash. I worked out the anagram after.

Wow! This is a struggle for me. Have spent most of this coming up with a possible answer and working out how the clue works from there. Can't believe 18a took me so long as I'm there right now. Can someone explain 12d please? I have the answer I think but no idea.

It was a pretty tricky crossword.

12a Is a sort of double definition with "most" being "th. ma.......y" and when you reach age 18 you are said to have reached "the age of ma....y" or the threshold of adulthood.

Thanks Brendan. I'm struggling on but likely to be back I think. South of Italy currently cooler than the UK I think. But glorious nonetheless.

All done finally. Still don't get 4a and a few others but on to the Everyman later.

I got the answer to 1ac really early but wouldn't write it in because I was fixated on the mathematical definition of the first 5 letters rather than the dictionary definition, so I couldn't parse it. Felt very stupid when my daughter pointed out my mistake.

Yes, I was thinking of the mathematical definition, hence I said "loosely" in my earlier hint.

Late on Sunday night and still struggling with this. Really helpful reading the forum which had helped me get a few more. Help with 4a would be appreciated as it'd give some first letters (6d and 7d). And 13d would help too so I could get first letters for 13a and 23a. Feeling very dense!
