Thank you very much. I’ll work a bit harder when I have had a bit of fresh air.

I have the lower problem rows sorted, but am struggling with the upper. I can't make any sense of 1D (though I have all the other downs, so I know which way the letter has to move: which ought to help but it doesn't). My understanding of the upper affliction means that a particular letter ought to be added, but that rather mars the "real words" aspect. Luckily I'm old enough to be (just) familiar with the instruction!

This one's normal entry - 2 letter abbrev for 'hands' outside (anag) CAT and move up [d] from 'min[d]ing' to give the container (add to trouble[d] for the anagrind) def 'breed'... I think.

...sorry, it's not the 'container' but the 'interruption' indicator.

cockie, it’s equestrian, height measurement of a horse is "hands high" or "hh", eg 15.2hh would be 62 inches

Not got the clue to hand, but I think it was SINK as in settle, so the a moves. It’s IN in S (focus/middle letter of Frasier) K (thousand)

Thanks all. I couldn't get away from a N.E. dialect word meaning gains.
All done now.
