Hi Lumen,

six letter word for "fur" minus it's last letter/reduced on 2 letter abbr. of "street" all inside a 6 letter word for "seller" (a meaning I didn't know) - definition is "carpet".

Wow that is really pushing the definition of ‘seller’.
But thanks Brendan. That means I had 25 down wrong... though it was Reason.

Well I am stumped. the only thing I cannot see is the intermediate placing of the weapon, and am now going cross eyed!

Bother! I have gone agley somewhere. All seemed to be going swimmingly, grid filled (with some gaps in the top row), weapon retrieved, deed done and name inscribed. But entering the newcomers and the weapon on the top line meant that 3d (I had an early 19c protester) and 5d (an archaic poetic form of “easy”) became non-words. Heeding the instruction, while leaving the last letter in situ resulted in 23d, 29d, 32d and 35d all becoming mince. I will have to wait for the solution to bring enlightenment!

Hi jack aubrey, it seems a real shame having got so close not to "put the icing on the cake". Should you like to send me a copy of your grid "to date" I could advise.
