RobP86 1d the spare letter arises from the anagram (new) of age. I think the spare in 38a is half of 'morning' - usual abbrev.

Got there in the end having worked out the author, then the book and quote. Still not completely clear on some eg 21a got the answer, know the spare letter but?? Same thing with 27a and 39a...how on earth is their a c involved?!

Still, quite pleased.

27a - regressive military = lim ie mil reversed then the extra letter in front of whats remains is a manoeuvre

I think you need a much more famous (3 letters) general than the one with the same name as the clue answer - then remove the last letter. The first four letters = Latin abbrev. for 'in the time of'.

The C comes from the 2 letter abbrev. for scilicet ('ten' is the 'large number').

...my other civil war 'General' wasn't one - he was an attorney! Sorry about that, although the 3 letter one is fine (and that's all you really need, granama1).
