...and be very careful with the 3rd down answer - with a different treatment it would appear to be a group B clue out of sequence.

many thanks. I will persevere but the clue order really is making life very difficult. I suspect it will be beyond me!

I am now down to 3 clues: L often confused with numeral this order of magnitude larger (6), Single US bomber, missing camp, heading north (4), Spenser's put on to drive around Germany (4). I think the first and third start with the same letter and that the second is originally a five-letter word which loses N to become the name of a plant. Also, is what is to be written below the grid a phrase or two separate words? Any hints/nudges in the right direction would be appreciated.

Alwayspuzzled, for your first one...

An anagram(confused) of L +often +a Roman numeral give a word meaning 'order of magnitude', size. If you drop the first letter you get a word meaning to embrace, wrap...

Spencer's... leads to a five letter word meaning to put on, provide. I'm not sure of the parsing, I got the answer from crossing letters. You're correct about it starting with the same letter as the 'L often...' entry.

The US bomber is probably the most famous ever - remove 3 letters regarding sexual orientation and reverse what's left.

For the Spenser clue - it's an obscure (falconry) 5 letter word for, 'to drive into water' (around D).
