LEVI(n) is (archaic) 'lightning' - strike out 'n = 'in' and drop extra letter '(s)he' from the clue

'sidewalks' is the signifier for an Americanism (and 'can' = buttocks in USA). So, a double def clue.

Re 31, 'can' has several meanings on the sidewalk ie in USA. One fits I think.

...and I'm wrong about the (n) from 10ac - it's the end of 'i(n)' that is struck out, sorry.

That was tough!

All sorted apart from the "contrivance" - I assume that it shares its name with a bird?

Yes, it shares the name of a bird. Each component is made up of the appropriate letters and pictures the theme. I still have a couple of ??s 34 and 38 down. Pretty sure I have all the letters from the crossing words and (I think) the clash in 34 but can't find words in Chambers that fit/make sense. Also puzzled by the spare letter in 42d...'z'? But can't yet see how it fits as a type of the themed word. Any hints gratefully received!
