I have sorted out the LHS and solved quite a lot of clues but the bottom RHS is still a problem.

Help with this clue would be appreciated:
Force restrains moderate President

I think PINK might be moderate

bananabean - 'moderate' = CO(o)L

sunray - The 'Queen...' clue is 1dn.

Some answers share the same letters, that's how they are all accomodated in the grid (either condensed or spread out, depending on which of the two representations is featured).

I agree - there doesn't seem to be a good reason for the lack of word lengths (other than to make it more difficult).

I think I can work out the 12 letter "stirs up the masses".

As if the puzzle isn't tough enough without entry lengths, there is also large ambiguity in the endgame, as one of the 'unusual' representations can be made in two totally different ways - one shaped in a circular form and one in an X, both fitting equally well with the eight entries involved. I think I know which is intended, but it could be seen by many as a 50:50 call.

I've only recently started after spending most of the day gardening and I'm wondering if this one is worth the effort, judging by the comments already submitted. I, too, am perplexed by the fact that there are 6 more clues than slots to enter them. I'll give it a try and carry on until I no longer enjoy it. Thanks to the contribuors who've already posted useful comments!

It's a film forming on hot metal - a common 5 letter word but an obscure definition (C is missing from the wordplay).
