Anagram of sportsma and an H (4,5)

Italian phrase (1, 7). Abbreviation for April, excellent refers to a playing card.

orson - first letters of the three words gives you 3 letters of a 4 letter word.

I finished this this morning after a bit of a slog, and agree with previous comments about answer lengths not being provided. It just made the whole thing exponentially more difficult when the clues were hard enough anyway for a virtual cold-solve. But there is only one unequivocal solution, despite doubts having been voiced

I've finished too, apart from finding the examples to be written underneath, which I can't be bothered with. I think it would have been a better puzzle without having to add and delete letters from wordplay as it was fiddly enough as it was.

I know it's a very big number to one against there being a mistake in a Listener puzzle, but shouldn't there be a second E in the last across entry, working from the clue as printed?

Sorry to hear about the car write-off. It happened to me c.1990 and the insurance business dragged on for a long time Consolation - not wholly effective -was no-one hurt, and I hope this true for you.

durban - isn't it a two word (2+5) synonym minus the 'a' around N?

Talking of mistakes, my Chambers app has ski bum as two words but it has been given as hyphenated to make the clue work.
Can someone explain the “ancient slaves” wordplay?
I have opted for four large letters in the bottom right corner.
