Glad I could help, Orson. I've never heard that actual word used very often, but have frequently heard a version - the beginning of the word+ opposite of 'husband' . It was common all through my (Scottish) childhood.

Orson, the 'hospital' appears only in crosswords - I don't think anyone's used the word for years! The 'grinding' could be to floors...

Sunray, I mentioned an astronaut in reference to 24a. Take a C out of an alternative word (not used so much these days) and you have the answer. Did you ever watch Fireball XL5? The opening song said: "I wish I was a ... the fastest guy alive."

For myself, I've been tearing my hair out over 1a.

Orson, 1 A is an old word for 'panic' It's distant with 'end of the'....

I see! I would have got if much earlier, malone, if the clue had mentioned frighten rather than panic. I don't think of panic as a transitive verb, although I see it can be.
