Thank you - that destroys one of my would-be tennis players!

OK, I'm not really asking for further help at this stage. I have all but the pairs, none of which makes any sense to me. I have all the additional letters. But do these really spell out a christian name, an apparently-unrelated surname, and a piece of electrical equipment?

I know. I think I have it all now. I switched off the computer, and then it suddenly hit me. Bah!

I had to sleep on this one and it all fell into place quite neatly this morning - I think. I'm a little nervous abut my last one in, (2 down), which I have as the first name of a rather obscure American activist who pairs, via special instructions, with 22 across. Have I got my pairings wrong? The fellow in question has achieved a certain amount of fame, but not in my purview...
