Tintin, I think I have got only one tennis player. I've not rounded up all the redundant letters from the clues. I got the thematic stuff in a patchy fashion- 7 Down immediately linked up with a redundant word, and a similar thing happened with the 1 A word and a very short, unclued entry.

Well, I don't have 7,27 or 28 but as far as I can see it's not true that the names in the grid are connected to each other except via the third word from the clues. If i'm right, these words have to anagrammatised twice.

Well, I was just relieved to get to the end with matched up characters, one of whom wasn't a real person! Maybe my solution is wrong, but it was a bit of a slog.

Please confirm that the redundant words are in 1a, 17a, 25a, 29a and 3d. I,m making links, but still don't see the whole picture!

Done! - though "five pairs of characters linked cryptically to each other" doesn't seem to me to be true.
